Thank You to the Sponsor of Restaurant Week

Why The Pineapple?

Although more than a thousand miles separate Virginia and the Caribbean, the ties have always been strong. From the early days of the colony, ships routinely plied these waters, bringing cargo, including good eats and good drinks. Among the manifest: the pineapple. During these early days of Virginia, the pineapple, because of its great cost, quickly became a symbol of hospitality. The fruit was priced at a king’s ransom, or rather, a royal governor’s ransom, because of the long time it took to get to the colony. Once here, the shelf life was greatly diminished. To offer a guest a pineapple, or to decorate the home with one, displayed prosperity, and hospital, intimating that the very best was reserved for visiting guests. Virginia Governor Baron de Botetourt ordered dozens of pineapples at a time. Today this stately, golden-hued fruit, capped with a showy green crown, still means “you are welcome” here.

It’s appropriate, then, that this harbinger of warm welcomes is also a symbol for the 2024 Virginia Beach Restaurant Week as area restaurants open their door share wonderful dishes at exceptional prices.
